teamLab (founded 2001) is an art collective, interdisciplinary group of ultra-technologists whose collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, design, and
the natural world. The team is comprised of various specialists such as artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects. teamLab aims to explore a new relationship between humans and nature, and between oneself and the world through art.
For their debut participation at Art Jakarta, teamLab brings “Dark Waves,” a movement of waves in water, simulated in a computer- generated three-dimensional space. This work explores the perspective of premodern Japanese paintings where water was considered as a living entity. Here, teamLab allows us to become immersed in nature through the work and feel that there is no boundary between ourselves and nature. “Dark Waves” by teamLab is presented by Gajah Gallery at this year’s Art Jakarta Spot.
