Huang Po-Chih (b.1980, Taiwan) graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan in 2011. His diverse artistic practice revolves around the circumstances and history of his family which enables him to be involved in issues such as agriculture, manufacturing, production and consumption.
For Art Jakarta Spot 2019, Huang Po-Chih presents “Production Line”, which consists of denim shirts which had been made in part at OCT Contemporary Art Terminal in Shenzhen, China (Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale), then shipped to be finished and exhibited at the Taipei Fine Art Museum (Taipei Biennial). Based on the working life of Huang Po-chih’s mother, a former textile factory worker, it shows the outsourcing of the clothing industry over the past thirty years from Taiwan to Shenzhen, China. This project demonstrates the universality of capitalism through the experiences of an individual and could be considered as a kind of sequel in terms of the relocation of factories and the goods they produce. In a series of exchange of labour, capital, commodities, and art funding from museums, the voluntary and involuntary participants get involved in a redefinition of the meaning of“participation”.
