Jakarta-born and Bandung based Faisal Habibi (b.1984) is an artist known through his works which always examine everyday objects from a different point of view. Faisal Habibi studied at the sculpture studio of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Institute of Technology Bandung in 2003-2008 (BFA). He has extensively exhibited his works in Indonesia and abroad in group shows: in Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Singapore, Berlin, Germany and in Richmond, Australia.
This carpet design is a part of Faisal Habibi’s notable ongoing series of artworks called "This Thing". The series is concerned with the everydayness of forms. Habibi’s work deals with forms we are all familiar with. He observes and analyzes everyday objects and when he understands the structures of these everyday objects, he takes out the elements from a systematic structure that catches his eyes. Next, with a formalist approach, he uses these elements to create the works. To determine the size and dimensions of an artwork, Habibi uses ergonomics, his own experiences, including feelings and thoughts. Each work in the series is characterized by a certain anonymity to open up the possibility of many different perceptions, experiences and interpretations.
